Clinton St. John is an interdisciplinary artist living in Calgary, Alberta.

His work considers what lies in and around the fallible human: death & grief, sexuality, mythological tropes and supernatural phenomenon. He explores the uncertain line between reality and fantasy, using intuitive imagery and carefully placed text to commutate his lived experience and otherworldly curiosities into paintings, drawings, sculpture, and music.

In his visual work, loosely rendered faces and figures are placed in Neo-expressionistic, obscure settings, that embrace the primal brushstroke as a working counterpoint to the hyper-real aesthetic of our technological age. There is a layering of material and meaning in his process, using the act of creation to navigate uncanny worlds while simultaneously attempting to make sense of his own.

St. John is an active member of the music scene in Calgary, who over the last few decades has played shows across Canada, the U.S, and Europe while releasing multiple albums, both under his own name and with acts such as The Cape May and Florida BC. Recent musical output has included solo live performances with songs bracketed by electroacoustic improvisations, and an upcoming release of music made in collaboration with American singer Nina Nastasia.
